From Preparation to Progress: Where JWest Stands Today

As we begin 2026, we’re excited to share how the progress made in 2025 is helping move JWest forward. Thanks to the dedication of our project team and the support of our community, important groundwork is now in place for the next phase.

Permitting and Construction Milestones
Over the past year, JWest Corp and its consultants completed key permit applications and rezoning steps. The updated Development Permit and Building Permit (Stage 1) were both submitted and the current re-zoning was enacted. The City now has what it needs to move toward excavation in 2026, with approvals expected in the months ahead.

We also took an important step by selecting Urban One Builders as the Construction Manager for the new JCC. Urban One brings extensive experience delivering large scale, complex residential and institutional projects across British Columbia. Signing the Letter of Intent with Urban One at this stage allows the team to optimize design, construction sequencing, and cost efficiencies as we work to meet budget targets.

“We are truly honoured to have been selected for this project. Being entrusted with the construction of the JCC is especially meaningful, as it represents not only a landmark building, but more importantly the next phase of growth and vitality for the Jewish community.

This is a complex and ambitious building, and we look forward to collaborating closely with the entire project team to deliver a facility that will serve the community for generations to come.”

- Allan Beron, President, Urban One

Why Move Forward Now
After several years of uncertainty, the economic environment is beginning to steady. Home sales in Metro Vancouver have slowed, prices have eased, and borrowing costs have come down. This creates a calmer, more predictable construction environment for long-term community projects — one that allows planning to move forward without the pressure of rapid price swings or overheated competition.

Responding to Change in the Neighbourhood
As Oakridge continues to evolve, this moment carries particular significance for the Jewish community. The JCC has long been a cornerstone of Jewish life — a place where identity is nurtured, traditions are passed on, and community is strengthened across generations. Today, ensuring that this presence remains strong, visible, and future-ready is both timely and necessary.

Moving forward now is about responding to that responsibility. The new campus represents an investment in Jewish continuity and confidence — a place the Jewish community can be proud of, one that reflects who we are today and who we aspire to be tomorrow. It will stand as a welcoming and visible expression of Jewish life, creating opportunities for connection, learning, and understanding, and serving as a beacon for others to engage with Jewish values, culture, and community. This project is about securing a vibrant future for Jewish life in Vancouver — rooted in pride, openness, and a deep sense of belonging.

What makes this project different is that JWest is delivering to the city a community centre that is Jewish at heart and open to all. Importantly, even the ongoing operating costs will be funded by the community, representing a significant and lasting contribution to both the Jewish and Oakridge communities.

Looking Ahead
As we prepare for the next phase of the project and plan ahead for what comes next, our focus is on the details that matter most: practical parking solutions, safe access to the site, and the day-to-day experience of students, families, and JCC members throughout future construction phases.

This project belongs to the community and as it continues through the City’s review and planning process, we remain committed to keeping you informed, involved, and connected — every step of the way. As momentum continues, opportunities to be part of this generational project remain available for those who wish to support and help shape its future.

We gratefully acknowledge the support this project has received from the Government of British Columbia and the Government of Canada.
